What is Rat Hunting?
Rat Hunting is a new and exciting sport for you and your canine companion that is taking off throughout the country. We offer Barn Hunt trials for you to enjoy here at Rocky Top Mountain K9 Agility.
Classes
Dogs as young as 6-months old can compete in Barn Hunt competitions. You can begin rat hunting classes with us when your dog is as young as 3 months old. Not only will your dog learn to use his sense of smell, you will learn to recognize your dog’s indicators that he has located the rat and how to strategize to achieve your best team performance.

Agility Classes
Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. The sport is great exercise for you and your dog. Consequently, the handler’s controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the dog and coordination of the handler. In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. The surface may be of grass, dirt, rubber, or special matting. Depending on the type of competition, the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed. Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important.There is a lot to learn for both you and your canine companion to mesh into a competitive agility team. So, agility classes are a must to determine if the sport is right for you and your dog.
Dogs need to be at least 12-months old before beginning full height jumping and attempting full height obstacles. However, there is plenty of foundation work to be accomplished before your dog ever gets on the agility equipment. We can customize a training plan based on your dog’s age and experience to get you started having fun with this great sport.
Classes are available for beginner to advanced levels. We offer group classes, private and semi-private lessons. All privates are by appointment only. Use the contact page to contact us for more information on classes and privates. If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather you will be notified by phone and the session will be moved to the next week.
All classes are held at my home outdoors on grass. Some foundation training will be done in my barn. The outdoor training field is 120’ x 120’ and is completely fenced with chain link fencing. There is plenty of shade for you and your dog.

FOUNDATION AGILITY
Digital PRFor dogs that have never done agility before. Dogs must be 3 months of age.
This class will help dog and handler teams learn the skills they will need to be successful when starting agility training. It focuses on becoming a team with your dog. Class will cover, targeting, handling moves, flat work for agility, clicker training, rear end awareness and some basic obstacle introduction.

BEGINNER AGILITY
EventsDogs must have completed Foundation Agility and be at least 8 months old.
This class will focus on introduction to all the agility obstacles (weave poles after the dog is 1 year or older), as well as some simple sequencing and handling skills.

INTERMEDIATE AGILITY
ProductsDogs must have completed Beginner Agility.
This class will focus on more advanced sequences and handling skills, as well as continuing to work on correct obstacle performance and gaining distance on the course.

ITEMS TO BRING TO CLASS
Products1. Copy of your dog’s vaccination record for us to keep. Your dog must be up to date on vaccinations.
2. A flat buckle or snap collar (no pinch collars or choke collars).
A 6’ leash that clips onto your dog’s collar.
3. Training treats. You need plenty of treats for every class. Soft or semi-soft work best. Some good ones are Bil-Jac and Zukes. String cheese and hot dogs work well also.
4. Portion sizes should be very small and kept in a zip lock bag. We recommend you do not feed your dog right before class so they are hungry for treats during training and feed lightly their meals on training day.
5. Toys work great if your dog is toy motivated but still bring treats as you still need them.
What is Agility?
About Rocky Top Mountain K9 Agility, LLC
My husband and I moved from Minnesota to Cookeville, TN in June of 2014 and started hosting Nadac Funraiser agility trials. In November 2016 we moved to a 13 acre farm in Lancing, TN and continued hosting Nadac Funraiser agility trials. Rocky Top Mountain K9 Agility was formed in July of 2018. We now host 6 Nadac and 5 CPE agility trials here on our farm every year.
In 2001 my husband and I got our 1st Border Collie, Cody. I at first started with obedience classes when he was 3 months old, on graduation day of our obedience class someone asked me, would I be going into agility class with Cody, I asked them, “What is agility?” They told me and I replied “No, I don’t think so”. My husband was there and told me, “Why don’t you give it a try?” The rest is history, I was hooked and boy was my husband sorry he suggested we try it. Cody and I went on to compete in USDAA, NADAC, ASCA, CPE and AKC. Eventually we decided that CPE and NADAC were the venues for us. Cody and I earned many Championship titles in both venues and attended the Nadac Championships 6 times and CPE Nationals 4 times. We earned all the level Nadac titles from Novice to Elite and 2 NATCHES. He earned his 10,000 Lifetime points award right before he was retired from agility at the age of 13. He also earned 8 CPE Championship titles. I will always remember him for all that he taught me in agility. Since than I have ran 4 more Border Collies in agility that have all taught me to be a better handler.
I currently have 2 young Border Collies and a Sheltie in training. We have 6 Border Collies and 1 Sheltie who all compete in dog sports of some kind or another. We have earned a total of 12 CPE Championship titles and 13 Nadac Championship titles in agility.
In March of 2019 I started my 18 month old Border Collie Annie on Barnhunt, in less than a year she earned her Master Rat and Master X Championship titles. Annie and I loved the rat hunting sport so much that I looked into hosting rat hunting trials. Last October 2019 we started hosting Rat Games and Hide N’ Seek trials. Our dogs love this new dog sport of hunting rats. We host 7 Rat Games and 7 Hide N’ Seek trials a year.
I also do some herding on the side with my dogs when time allows. We hope to get our own sheep someday so we can do more herding.

Mission Statement
Our goal is to promote good sportsmanship for handlers and dogs in training and in trialing and most of all to have fun with your dog: to provide a safe environment for training and hosting performance/sports trials at our facility. We promote the sport of dog agility and rat hunting for all dogs, including mixed breeds.
